Step by step
- 01
Start at the collar
Gently pull the collar ribbing a little wider than relaxed. Healthy ribbing springs back; rotted ribbing crackles, splits or stays stretched.
- 02
Check armpits and shoulders
Sweat and light exposure concentrate here. Give the fabric a soft two-finger stretch and listen for faint tearing.
- 03
Inspect fold lines
Shirts stored folded for decades often rot along the folds first. Look for lines that look thinner or lighter than the surrounding fabric.
- 04
Hold it to the light
Rotted areas often look thin, papery or show tiny pinholes when backlit.
- 05
Feel the print
Heavily rotted shirts may have prints that flake or lift because the fabric underneath has broken down.
What causes dry rot
Age combined with heat, light, humidity swings, residual sweat or detergent and poor ventilation weakens fibers over time. Some dark-dyed shirts appear more vulnerable, and stored-folded deadstock is not immune.
Dry rot vs normal wear
Thin, soft fabric isn't rot. Wear is fabric that's thin but still flexible. Rot is fabric that has lost its strength and tears with little force.
Storage that prevents it
Keep shirts cool, dark and dry. Avoid plastic bags and attics or basements. Wash gently in cold water, air dry flat and don't hang heavy shirts by the shoulders for years.
Colors and fabrics to check extra carefully
Collectors often report more dry rot on dark, heavily dyed shirts and on shirts stored for years in hot or damp places. Check black band tees and long-stored deadstock with extra care.
Buying online
Ask the seller to stretch the collar and armpits on camera or describe the result. Request backlit photos of thin areas. A seller who refuses is giving you an answer.
Displaying a rotted shirt
If you keep a fragile shirt, store it flat, support it fully in a frame or box and avoid hanging it. Do not wear or machine wash it.
FAQ
- Can dry rot be fixed?
- No. Weakened fibers can't be restored. Backing fabric can stabilize a shirt for display but it won't make it wearable.
- Should I buy a dry-rotted grail?
- Only as a display piece at a heavily reduced price, and only if the seller discloses it.
- Does washing cause dry rot?
- Washing doesn't cause it, but machine washing an already rotted shirt can tear it apart.
- What does dry rot look like on a T-shirt?
- Thin or papery areas, small holes or cracks, and fabric that tears with very little force.
- Is dry rot the same as mildew?
- No. Mildew is mold growth. Dry rot is weakened fibers, though damp storage can contribute to both.
